Amazing for sharpening all types of tools for turning

These gadgets are usually designed to catch gullible woodturners but this version actually works. Well packaged, strong construction. Easy to set up. Easy to use, acurate repeatable grind angles and shapes. Highly recommend this jig for the workshop.

The key to successful wood turning is using sharp tools. This set, in addition to a slow rpm grinder, is the key. To be transparent, I already own a name brand sharpening jig for my turning tools. However, this jig goes beyond gouges and scrapers. It has a few additional attachments that are useful for other cutting tools in the shop, as well as other helpful items. For example, it includes some sharpening jigs if you are into exactness with the cut angles of your gouges. The multitude of parts can be overwhelming but thankfully a fairly decent user manual is available. It provides clear instructions on how to set up the fixture. As for the use of all the various platforms, jigs, setup gauges, etc. the manual does an excellent job of telling you how to use them. In addition, it does provide a lot of information about types of grinds and which method (as discussed below) works best in using the system. The system offers 3 grinding methods, actually 4 if you ignore the whole system and free-hand it as some pros can do. (But what's the point of getting the system, if not to use it) The first is the multi-grind which allows you to roll the gouge at a preset angle. Multi-use setup blocks are provided for establishing the correct reference point on the wheel, i.e. the angle at which you grind and the distance from the wheel the cutting edge is presented. The second method is using the platform. This method focuses on scrapers, skews and other woodworking chisels which require a consistent edge presentation. A setup gauge is provided for the angle of the platform to achieve a specific grind, a very nice touch to include. And finally, the pocket method allows for setting the gouge, for example a spindle roughing gouge, into a pocket at the end of the extending arm. Once the distance you prefer for the face of the gouge is established, by sliding the extending arm in or out, you merely roll the tool from one edge to the other. It definitely does the trick, a very close copy of the name brand competitors. But the instruction manual is rudimentary and you will learn more about the installation process and proper alignment from good online videos. No obvious manufacturing defects or issue so far. I put it under a Rikon 80-805 8” low speed grinder with upgraded wheels, Norton 80, CBN 180, for a very easy to use system, once I got the minor issues worked out. I bought the Vevor grinder stand, as well, to mount it all on. The bolts that came with the stand were far too short to reach through the plywood base and riser blocks needed to get the tool system aligned and stable under the wheels. The local True Value did not have any long enough, either. Ended up ordering stainless 80 mm M10 bolts and nuts online to make everything fit right. Now a newbie woodturner is learning how to sharpen! Sharp tools male it easier!
