L'incisione laser funziona secondo il principio della carbonizzazione ad alta temperatura. L'efficacia dipende dal materiale da incidere. Legno e carta vanno bene, ma plastica e acrilico rilasciano un odore sgradevole dopo essere stati bruciati ad alte temperature, il che è dannoso per i bambini. Ci sono alcune precauzioni da prendere quando si utilizza una macchina per incisione laser.
